Wrexham fans say goodbye to ‘legend’ as club release eight players

Wrexham fans have flocked to social media to bid farewell to captain Luke Young after his exit from the club was confirmed.

Young played a key role in Wrexham’s rise to superstar status following the takeover from Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The 31-year-old joined the club in 2018 and has made 259 appearances, scoring 22 times.

Young was a prominent figure in Wrexham’s promotion to the Football League last year after a 15-year hiatus.

He has played 25 times in Ligue 2 this season, helping the Red Dragon secure a second consecutive promotion.

But Young will not be part of Wrexham’s quest for League One next year alongside seven other players who will not be retained by the club.

Joining Young in bidding farewell to the racecourse are Aaron Hayden, Rob Lainton, Callum McFadzean, Ben Tozer, Jordan Tunnicliffe, Owen Cushion and Dan Davies.

Wrexham have offered their “sincere thanks” for the efforts and contributions of the eight players set to leave the club this summer.

In reaction to the news, Wrexham fans praised the outgoing star, with some supporters calling the midfielder a “legend”.

One fan wrote: “What a servant to the club Youngy was, through thick and thin he always played for the badge. »

Wrexham AFC owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds reveal plans for major stadiums which include expanding the racecourse to have between 45,000 and 55,000 seats.

A final Wrexham supporter wrote a heartfelt tribute to Young: “My captain. Let us never underestimate what a difference this man has made to Wrexham. He stepped in when needed, stood aside when necessary, pulled us by the straps and carried us across the line. Diolch @8Lukeyoung, we will be forever in your debt.”

The Welsh club also paid tribute to Young in a separate social media post which read: “259 appearances and 22 goals. Consecutive Player of the Season awards in 2019/20 and 2020/21.

“Twice winner of the Steve Edwards Goal of the Season Trophy, a top scorer award and our first team captain, winner of back-to-back promotion. Diolch, Youngy!
