World No. 1 Indian pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bowed out in the pre-quarter-finals of the men’s doubles of the All England Badminton Championships after a straight loss to Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana of Indonesia. Satwik and Chirag lost on Thursday evening 16-21 15-21 against the Indonesians, champions here in 2022. The top-seeded Indian shuttlers, who won Roland-Garros last week, were unable to keep the pressure on their rivals, the third seed, and went down in just over an hour.
Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa were also eliminated in the round of 16 of the women’s doubles, following a 21-11 11-21 11-21 defeat to Zhang Shu Xian and Zheng Yu of China.
Later today, India’s Lakshya Sen will face Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia, the 2021 champion, in the men’s singles quarter-finals.
Earlier, Sen recorded a stunning three-game win over world number 3 Anders Antonsen to advance to the quarter-finals. Sen won 24-22 11-21 21-14.
However, it was curtains for double Olympic medalist PV Sindhu as she bowed to a 19-21 11-21 defeat against her nemesis and world number one An Se Young of South Korea.
