President Trump’s plan to impose radical prices on most American trade partners has governments around the world to plan telephone calls, send delegations to Washington and offer proposals to reduce their import taxes in order to escape the samples.
Monday, European officials proposed to drop the prices to zero on cars and industrial goods imported from the United States, in exchange for the same treatment. The Israeli Prime Minister was to personally assert Mr. Trump on Monday during meetings at the White House. The senior Vietnam leader during a telephone call last week, proposed to get rid of prices on American products, while Indonesia is preparing to send a high -level delegation to Washington, DC, to “negotiate directly with the American government”.
Even Lesotho, the little country without coastline in southern Africa, assembled a delegation to send to Washington to protest against the prices on its exports to the United States, notably Denim for Calvin Klein and Levi’s.
Mr. Trump and his advisers have given mixed signals on the issue of whether the United States is ready to negotiate. Trump said on Sunday that the prices would remain in place until the American trade deficits disappear, which means that the United States no longer buy these countries it does not sell them. But the administration always seemed to be welcoming offers from foreign nations, which are desperate to try to prevent more samples that come into force on Wednesday.
On Monday, when the markets fell back for a third day and Trump threatened even more punishing prices on China, the president said that “negotiations with other countries, which also requested meetings, would begin to take place immediately”.
“Countries around the world are talking to us,” wrote the president on Truth Social Monday morning. “Difficult but equitable parameters are under adjustment. Talked to the Japanese Prime Minister this morning. He sends a high level team to negotiate! ”
