Woody Johnson has no regrets about releasing Aaron Rodgers

In a stunning move, Jets owner Woody Johnson on Tuesday publicly criticized the team’s starting quarterback (starting in Week 7), Justin Fields.

“If we can just complete one pass it would look good” Johnson told reporters, among others.

They had a guy last year who could complete a pass. They didn’t want him to come back. But Johnson said he has no regrets about moving on from future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers.

“I never look back” Johnson said, via Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. “You have to look forward to football. Even when you remove players, they could go into the Hall of Fame. You never know. But Aaron is playing very well now. He’s in a situation that works for him.

Of course, Rodgers didn’t seem interested in a third season with the Jets – even if they wanted to. And, as we hear, there was a difference of opinion as to who had done it and who had not done it. General manager Darren Mougey wanted to keep Rodgers, we’re told. Coach Aaron Glenn wanted to move on.

Leaving Rodgers is only part of the problem. The other party is the guy they chose. By title, it was Mougey’s decision. However, it is possible that other members of the organization left their fingerprints on the move.

Up to and including Woody Johnson himself.
