The world number one Indian women’s compound archery team stormed into the final to stay in the hunt for a successive World Cup gold medal in Yecheon, Korea, on Wednesday.

The world number one men’s compound team, however, failed to live up to expectations and continued their lackluster performance to miss out on a bronze medal at the second stage of the World Cup.

The women’s trio of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Parneet Kaur and Aditi Swami, who clinched gold at the opening stage in Shanghai last month, ousted the world number 1. 4 USA 233-229 in the semi-final.

They will face the world number 1. 7 Turkey in the women’s compound team gold medal match here on Saturday.

Turkey beat top seed and local favorite South Korea 234-233 in the other semifinal.

It was overall smooth sailing for the Indian women’s team, who earned a bye to the quarters after finishing second in the qualifying round. They eliminated Italy 236-234 in the round of 16.

The men’s team of Priyansh, Prathamesh Fuge and veteran Abhishek Verma, who had slipped to fourth place in the qualifying round on Tuesday, lost to low-ranked Australia 133-133 (10-10*) during a barrage.

The Australians, ranked 21st in the world, surprised the Indian trio by opening with a 59 while losing just one point.

The Australian team of Bailey Wildman, Brandon Hawes and Jonathon Milne continued their good run and overcame a one-point deficit after the second round, to take the score to 233 at the end of the fourth regulation.

Both teams were all at 30 in the ensuing shoot-off, but the Australians edged out the inconsistent Indians by shooting two X’s (arrows closer to center) to secure the bronze medal.

After starting their campaign with an easy 235-212 victory over low-ranked Vietnam, India overcame tough competition from top-seeded Denmark and USA by winning both play-off matches.
