A 54 -year -old woman crossing the street in National City was struck and killed by a driver in a sedan early Saturday morning, police announced.
The woman crossed East Plaza Boulevard near Palm Avenue around 2:10 am when she was struck by a Chevy sedan led by a 27 -year -old man who fled the premises, according to police from the national city. The road was temporarily closed for several hours in the afternoon.
The woman, whom the police found in the divider of the road center, died before she could be taken to the hospital, said Lieutenant Wade Walters in a press release. The authorities said the pedestrian, whose identity has not yet been released, would have been homeless.
Police arrested the man at his residence near the East 18th Street and F avenue. A witness followed the driver at his home and contacted the police to share his location, the SGT. Ruben Lopez said.
Investigators determined that alcohol was a factor in the accident. The driver of the Chevy sedan was sentenced to San Diego County prison and accused of suspicion of manslaughter in gross vehicle, downtown or large bodily injuries and an offense of offense, resulting in death or injuries.
Boulevard East Plaza reopened shortly after 1 p.m.
