A woman in the United States has told how she discovered her father was not her biological father after a stranger texted her to get a DNA test.
In a series of videos, TikTok user Lane (@laneiscool14) detailed her remarkable story.
Last year, she received an anonymous message from an unknown phone number encouraging her to take an Ancestry.com test.
“This f**king text message here changed my life forever,” she said in a three-minute clip.
“About a year ago now, on January 9, I received a text telling me to get a DNA test from Ancestry.
“And I think that’s fake, I FaceTime my friend, and I’m like, ‘Listen to this’. And she’s like, ‘I swear my instincts tell me this is real. You gotta answer’ So I answer, then they answer me.
The Brooklyn-based TikToker said the text conversation left her “shaken”. She added that the person created a “Facebook burner account” to message her and her husband about the DNA test.
“They didn’t provide me with any kind of proof that it was real, and obviously I called my mom immediately saying, ‘What the fuck’,” he said. – she continued.
Lane’s mother finally confessed that she had an affair with a 25-year-old man while she was in college at 35 to receive her degree in education.
She admitted that the man who raised Lane was not her father.
“I almost fell off my fucking chair,” Lane explained in the video.
“She had an affair with a guy ten years her junior when she was in college.
“It was a unique thing, but he even saw it on campus and said, ‘Is this mine?’ and she denied.
Lane immediately ordered an ancestry test. Six weeks later, she received her results.
“I find out that, yes, this man is my father. So I text him immediately, and he lives in California. He is British. What the fuck is this? ” she says.
“He said my mum sent him a Christmas card when I was two, saying my name on it and he’s been Google my name ever since.
“In 2007, my name came up, and he saw a picture of me, and he knew right away that I was his daughter.”
Lane said her biological father emailed her mother to get in touch with her, but she “threatened” him and told him to “leave them alone” and never contact them again.
“So what did he do? He’s been following me on social media all my life,” she said.
“He watched me hang out with my boyfriend, get married, have babies, everything, from the outside, unable to know me.”
Lane then posted a side-by-side photo of her and her birth father, writing, “I’m telling you this photo freaked me out.”
Her first video garnered 10.5 million views with many users shocked by Lane’s story and eager to know more.
“Horrible. He was denied a girl,” one person wrote.
“I’m glad you know the truth, but it’s a hell of a way to find out,” said another.
“It’s heartbreaking,” added another TikToker, while one remarked, “You look so much like your bio dad.”
“It makes me so sad that he missed so much when he wanted to be involved,” said a third.
In a follow-up video, Lane revealed that her birth father called her workplace at the time and asked her what time it closed in hopes of hearing her voice.
He also wanted to go and have his hair cut by her at the salon where she worked, but said his wife advised against it as she thought Lane would know immediately that he was her father.
Lane said in another video that it was not her biological father who sent the text messages, but her nephew, who found himself in a similar experience.
Lane said the family secret strained her relationship with her mother. As a result, she cut her out of her life.
“Separating my mom was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” Lane said.
“I never would have expected that.”
“I stayed there for about five days. We met once or twice a day to hang out and go out to eat or something and each time I felt like I was extracting information from him and I just felt like he didn’t like me not,” she explained.
“I was A-OK until the last day and then I got really emotional because I guess I was just hoping the last day would be different and when it wasn’t it was just tough .”
In a recent update, Lane revealed that she and the father who raised her haven’t spoken about the news, but he knows she’s not his biological daughter.
“One of my sisters who I am separated from, immediately told him. So I don’t know what his reaction was,” she said.
“I can only imagine he was as devastated as I was, but there’s also the fact that between him and [me]not many changes,” she said.
“He’s still my dad. I’m still his daughter. My kids are still his grandkids.
Lane explained that she will eventually talk to him about it and that she takes things at her own pace.
“I just feel like I have two dads now, which is a good thing,” she concluded.
