Woman declared dead comes back to life at Lincoln funeral home

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a woman who had been pronounced dead came back to life at a Lincoln funeral home.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded to Butherus-Maser & Love Funeral Home at 11:43 a.m. Monday. The caller said CPR was being performed on a 74-year-old woman.

Around 9:45 a.m., the woman was pronounced dead by staff at Mulberry Nursing Home in Waverly. She had been hospitalized and nursing staff expected her to die, according to Deputy Chief Ben Houchin.

Funeral home staff took the woman back to Lincoln. As she prepared her body for funeral service, a staff member noticed she was still breathing and called 911.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue transported the woman to the hospital and she is still alive as of Monday afternoon.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, but Houchin said no criminal intent has been found. It is also unclear whether any laws were broken.

The funeral home and nursing home had no comment.
