Woman booed for disrespecting ancient sacred Mayan pyramid

In a hugely disrespectful incident, a woman is widely condemned for dishonoring a Mayan sacred site at Chichen Itza in Mexico. This after the woman dared to break into a Mayan pyramid by climbing its stairs and performing a dance at the top of the pyramid. The whole incident took place at the Pyramid of Kukulkan, also known as El Castillo. The pyramid is 30 meters high and has 365 steps, which symbolizes the number of days in a year. For those who don’t know, it was built between the 8th and 12th centuries AD, by the pre-Columbian Maya civilization, and is considered one of the most remarkable constructions around the world. While the first visitors used to climb its stairs, in the early 2000s the curb was put in place to prevent damage to the structure and injury to people.

Now the high profile incident has come to light after a Twitter user shared a video originally shared on TikTok by a user named Angela Lopeze. While sharing the video, the Twitter user wrote in the caption, “A disrespectful tourist climbs an ancient Mayan pyramid in Mexico and gets booed.” The video opens by showing the camera zooming in on a woman, who can be seen rapidly ascending the stairs of the sacred structure, while people in the background are hissing and shouting at her. Then after a cut, the video shows the woman stepping out of the opening at the top of the pyramid, while the crowd at the foot of the massive structure can be heard booing her. Without feeling any shame or the realization of her mistake, the woman then dances on foot, intending to tease the guard who has climbed some steps to ask her to come down.

After a while, the woman can be seen coming down, however, the crowd was not happy with her actions and started chanting “carzel, carzel” continuously, which in English means jail. The crowd became so agitated that when the guards took her away, people surrounded her and started throwing water and empty bottles at her. Moving to the comments section, one user shared another video from a completely different angle, which shows some of the women in the crowd approaching the culprit and pulling his hair.

While the woman was widely criticized for her actions, several netizens also pointed to the mob violence, which was aimed at hurting the culprit. One user commented, “Obviously she was wrong to jump the fence and disrespect the monument, but it’s also pretty terrifying how quickly crowds can build. It seemed that some people were physically trying to reach him. It is a phenomenon of group behavior that should not be treated lightly.

So far, the video has been played over 46 lakh times and garnered over 1.2 lakh likes.
