Referee Stuart Attwell has been embroiled in further controversy after controversially disallowing a Wolves goal in Bournemouth’s 1-0 win at Molineux.

Attwell was already in the spotlight for his VAR role in denying Nottingham Forest three penalties during Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Everton, leading Forest to insinuate bias as they supported relegation rivals Luton .

And controversy followed after he was ruled that Matheus Cunha had fouled Justin Kluivert in an off-the-ball incident in the build-up to Hee Chan Hwang’s second-half equalizer, which appeared to have canceled out the opener by Antoine Semenyo.

He was not spotted in real time, but Attwell chose to commit the foul following advice from VAR Darren England to review it on the pitch monitor.

Attwell remained in the thick of the action as he then showed a straight red card to Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez for a foul on Matt Doherty in a decision which survived another VAR check.

The controversy meant Semenyo’s first-half goal for the Cherries proved enough for a record sixth away win of the Premier League season.

They moved to within two points of their highest points total in the Premier League, currently at 45, one short of their current record set in 2016/17.

For Wolves, it was a seventh match without a win in all competitions as they limped towards the finish line amid a list of chronic injuries.

Bournemouth were a threat from the start and were only pegged back in the first half hour by the heroics of Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa, who made three big saves.

He first pushed away Semenyo’s deflected effort, then had to collect Kerkez’s shot after Kluivert had cleverly stepped over the ball.

It was Kluivert who made the best save of the three, with Sa parrying his shot superbly after capitalizing on Nelson Semedo’s error.

The Cherries’ deserved opener came in the 36th minute as Max Kilman failed to clear Kerkez’s cross and Semenyo pounced to head home from close range.

Wolves came out after the break with more intent but it was Bournemouth who created the chances.

Sa produced another fine save to deny Kluivert after sticking his foot out to Marcos Senesi’s wayward shot, then Semenyo’s effort was narrowly deflected wide.

Wolves thought they had equalized in the 65th minute when Hwang headed home Semedo’s cross powerfully, but the celebrations were short-lived as Attwell chose to penalize a harmless tangle.

Attwell showed the red card in the 79th minute after Kerkez ran through Doherty and VAR upheld the decision.

Gary O’Neil’s men showed swagger in their bid to get back into the game, with Kilman’s goal in the 10th minute of injury time ruled out for marginal offside.
