MOUNT HOREB, Wisconsin — Police in Wisconsin shot and killed a student who pointed a pellet gun at him outside a college, according to the state Department of Justice.
On Saturday, the Wisconsin DOJ released an update to its ongoing investigation into the fatal shooting in front of Mount Horeb Middle School.
The DOJ said someone called 911 shortly before 11:15 a.m. Wednesday after observing a person walking toward the college with a backpack and “what appeared to be a long gun.” The state attorney general later confirmed he was an underage student, but did not say which school he attended.
Officers from the Mount Horeb Police Department responded to the scene where they found a person matching the reported description east of the main entrance of the school. The officers ordered the student to drop the weapon, but he did not obey. According to the DOJ, that’s when the student pointed a gun at the officers, who then shot him.

A Ruger .177 caliber air rifle was found at the scene.
Authorities said the student was never able to enter the school.
“No law enforcement officers or witnesses were physically injured during the incident,” the Justice Department said.
The officers involved in the shooting wore body cameras. They are on administrative leave.
The Wisconsin DOJ Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the multi-agency investigation.
“DCI continues to review the evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will provide investigative reports to the Dane County Prosecutor when the investigation is complete,” the DOJ said.
Mount Horeb is located approximately 25 miles west of Madison.
