Winter Storm Warnings Issued…Record Snowfall Possible

Winter storm warnings were issued for Acadiana on Tuesday due to impending historic snowfall expected to occur.

Acadiana remains on track for unprecedented snowfall in over 60 years!

Our thinking about the forecast has changed little since yesterday with precipitation appearing around midnight Monday night and snow accumulating at dawn Tuesday.

Snowfall totals of at least 4 to 6 inches will be possible, which would be the highest amounts on record since the 19th century!

Including the latest GRAF model timing with Euro, GFS and GRAF estimated snow totals…averaging all three for your location would be as good a guess as any.

Complete suite of charts:

It is worth noting that the latest GFS and Euro series have declined slightly.

Brutal cold and wind chills will follow this weather system…latest temperatures forecast:

Here’s the latest crawl we did on KATC:

A winter storm warning is in effect for all of Acadiana and central/southern Louisiana….

According to the NWS, total snow and sleet accumulations are between 4 and 6 inches and ice accumulations of up to 0.02 inches are possible south of the I-10 corridor to the coast. Winds gusting up to 35 mph…

Expect hazardous road conditions Tuesday through Wednesday… If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of emergency…

The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 511… People are asked to stay indoors until conditions improve…

If you must go out, dress in layers… Multiple layers of clothing will keep you warmer than a single heavy coat… Cover exposed skin to reduce your risk of frostbite or hypothermia… Gloves, a scarf and a hat will prevent you from losing your body heat…

People should consider delaying their travel. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary…bitter cold ensues with temperatures in the teens accompanied by wind chills in the single digits, Tuesday night through Wednesday. ..

Cold weather advisories will likely be in effect through Thursday morning… Subfreezing overnight temperatures for the coming week could keep snow and ice on the ground and in the area possibly into the weekend …

Temperatures will, however, moderate Friday through the weekend…Residents are encouraged to have a plan and arrangements in place for at least 2-3 days by Monday evening…Stay with KATC, katc.com and social media for further updates. ..
