A low pressure system will develop near the deep south Texas coast today and strengthen Tuesday. Clouds coming from the south will cover our region today. Although we may see morning sunshine and very cold temperatures, skies will be cloudy in the afternoon, keeping us in the 30s. Gradually through the evening, light patches of a mix icy conditions may develop as the cloud deck thickens. This would pose a problem for slippery roads, especially bridges, overpasses and overpasses in the evening.
The risk of freezing mixture or snow increases tonight into Tuesday morning. During this time, winds will strengthen as the low pressure system deepens. This will produce wind chill temperatures in the single digits into the teens tonight through Tuesday morning.
Travel from this evening until Tuesday morning will be smooth with very cold temperatures. We will see a combination of up to 0.10″ of ice accumulation, plus about 1″ of snow on top of that. Isolated locations in our area could see snow accumulation closer to 2″ where heavier bands have formed.
By Tuesday afternoon, the winter storm is moving east and away from our area. Indeed, the sun could rise later in the afternoon, which would improve road conditions with melting and drying. However, after sunset, any wet areas would refreeze into patches of black ice to watch for Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning.
