Still had agreed to work under the Sunderland model and was in the process of ironing out the finer details of a move to the Stadium of Light – including discussions about retaining Sunderland’s current Backroom squad – when Lens came knocking .
A keen admirer of the French team, Still Will is now set to continue his coaching career in France with the team which finished seventh in Ligue 1 this season.
For Sunderland, the search for a new head coach continues following the dismissal of Michael Beale on February 19.
Since then, first-team coach Mike Dodds has been in caretaker charge of the club until a permanent replacement is appointed.
The Wearsiders will now turn their attention to a shortlist of candidates for the position, with the club’s hierarchy ready to wait for the right candidate for the job.
With 10 weeks until the start of the new season, Sunderland will be hoping to get the fixture right soon.
Despite securing a play-off place in their first league season, Sunderland struggled to reach the level they had reached previously.
The Black Cats finished the season in 16th position in the second tier, with the new boss tasked with throwing themselves into the play-off race once again.
