In 2023, Colorado coach Deion Sanders slammed the door on coaching in the NFL, saying “I would never do that.”
Most recently, he said he would only do what he said he would never do. if he trains his sons. Now there’s a chance he could coach in the NFL, without coaching one or both of his sons.
Amid reports of communications between Deion and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and betting odds that had Sanders as favorite (now Kellen Moore), WFAA’s Ed Werder says Sanders “would almost certainly accept” the job in Dallas, that Sanders’ entourage encouraged him to pursue it and that Jones was “seduced” by this possibility.
There will be problems to resolve. Beyond Deion’s compensation, there is an $8 million buyout. And Deion will have to accept that Jerry runs the show, conducts two radio interviews a week and hosts postgame media scrums that will distract from Deion’s press conference (or vice versa).
It’s a fascinating story. And that would put the Cowboys ahead of the Chiefs in overall interest and intrigue.
That’s what Jones wants. Any team can win. Only the Cowboys are the Cowboys, and the Cowboys would reach another level in prime time if they were led by Coach Prime.
