Like many people, I’ve struggled with strike gear over the past few months – but now, with a simple click, it’s all over. Obviously a lot of this story is going to be swept under the rug, so for this soap box, instead of just talking about the week Days of our liveshow about we look back at the strike and try to understand what is launched and what remains?

“Cliché, hackneyed… Ugh”

Well, editor Ron Carlivati promised that when his material started airing again, we would know right away and he wasn’t wrong! Friday’s episode started with Leo being beyond nasty about how terrible it was. The spectatorWriting had become. It was a not-at-all-veiled reference to the writing of the show and it actually accomplished something that surprised me: I felt a little bad. For better or worse, the strike writers were there to keep the series in production and running so that it could survive.

In the DiMera living room, Sloan and Nicole stare at each other

And yes, I realize I’m saying this after being very reviews stories lately. I’m glad we’re finally through, but I’m not sure how much of my frustration was due to the temporary editors being asked to slow things down in the hopes that the strike would end quickly. (It wasn’t.) That said, there was also a lot of inconsistent characterization and attention to story that drove me crazy. And Radioactive Snow Paulina must be erased from existence.

And then there was Sloan, all over the map. She went from desperate to have a baby, to resentful of Jude and being a mother, to not wanting to lose him, to running off with EJ’s money. With him gone, Eric handing Jude over to Nicole and EJ while they discussed what happened at the front door was such a celebration. It would have made more sense for the Nicole/Sloan fight to have happened before the baby thief got away, but the returning writers made it work. Thanks also for sending Nicole back to him for stealing Sami’s baby! (Not that what Sloan did was OK, but history is history.)

Days in the foreground, Nicole is on the phone, while in the background, Eric blocks a surprised Sloan's exit from the DiMera salon.

More: Sloan’s return was not initially planned

But how quickly will EJ’s schemes be foiled? Sloan appeared to show up at Nicole’s house to talk to her about Eric. And now that Eric’s here… Come on, Sloan, do the right thing.

Personality change

I know not everyone cared about Everett (“New character? No, thank you, sir and/or ma’am!”), but back when we were trying to figure out what was going on with him, I I practically popped the popcorn every time. I was looking. OK, I wasn’t really excited, but it was fun finding out who he was, what was going on, and how it fit into the canvas. And then it dragged on. And disappeared for weeks. And I hung around some more.

By the time Marlena arrived at the shock (shocking we tell you!) conclusion that Everett had DID, my popcorn had gone stale. Worse still, I couldn’t help but wonder what the point was. “Beverett” was simply writing articles. Bobby wasn’t involved in anything nefarious, he had no ties to the drug ring (remember when I thought that might have been a thing?) and the only thing he did was hit women .

But on Friday we had more excitement than we’ve had in ages with Everett passing on Bobby before our eyes and fighting with Jada, Stephanie and Marlena. And there were little touches, like Jada, who is both a cop and knows how bad Bobby can be (even if we don’t), protectively placing herself between her ex and Stephanie when his personality changed , which were phenomenal and so organic to the situation. While I have no idea what Everett’s original intention was, unraveling multiple personalities is going to be a little more difficult. But I have the feeling that it will be integrated very quickly to get back on track with its original objective.

Kiriakis disaster

Marlena watches Alex closely as he stands in his office, pontificating

I almost feel bad that Theresa is so oblivious to the fact that Alex is cheating on her – because I think she cares about him. But any character growth Alex may have had has been undone in recent months. He’s almost worse than ever now that he has his money. If he’s kept around, expect the returning writers to put him back in order. I can’t tell from next week’s spoilers if he and Kristen decide to end their affair or if they stop hoping to make Brady and Theresa jealous and commit to each other, but I guess this open relationship will end.

Konstantin went from a slimy fraud to an aspiring supervillain and an attempt to humanize him with the loss of his daughter. It was all a disaster as the card went nowhere, The Pawn stuff went nowhere, and going after Maggie went on way too long.

Maggie Konstantin Da=ys

We wonder if Catharina is really dead or if Konstantin’s wife ran away with her. And my thoughts? New writers don’t care. Konstantin is about to leave and his family will never be mentioned again. And I hope they change everything planned for the wedding to oust Konstantin. I’m sorry, but I hated pretty much everything that was done with it. Let’s keep Alex his fortune and Maggie hers and move on.

Bid & Bout

They started to solve Li’s murder, but I’m going to take a chance in the dark and say that making this guy Gil Li’s murderer wasn’t in the plan. So this is going to be abandoned, which is pretty easy to say was just wild guesswork. Instead, I still think Li faked his death with the help of EJ or Dr. Rolf – or both! But Clyde (please, for the love of God) probably had nothing to do with it.

Johnny and Chanel smile at each other as they sit in the hospital lobby. She has papers

Johnny and Chanel’s baby will be just fine. While I think it would be really great to introduce a legacy character with a genetic condition like Down syndrome, I have a feeling the returning writers will just want to ignore the radioactive elements. Pulling out this particular story to make fun of made it clear what Carlivati thought about it.

And the burning of Horton was, as Susan Seaforth Hayes said, a production directive so that they could rebuild the set more easily, to set up and take down. But this time capsule went absolutely nowhere, I wonder if it was also passed to the temps and then laid off until Carlivati and his team returned. Or the perpetrators of the strike didn’t even have a clue what they were doing and it would simply be forgotten. Who knows?

Bright spots

That said, there were some good things. I had fun (mostly) during the February Sweeps. They revealed that Bobby and Everett were the same person, at which time I was eager to find out what was going on. Alex was accused of shooting Harris (why did he come back this week?!) and the first drug stuff with Holly’s overdose, Tate’s anguish and Nicole and Theresa remembering that she had a son and taking care of him made for very good television.

Brady and Theresa kiss while sitting on John and Marlena's couch.

Oh, and I was and still am thrilled beyond measure that the Holly/Johnny crush fell through when the strike hit. Please don’t bring this up again – especially since we have an actual teen scene building.

Parasitic thoughts…

  • Kristen calling child theft “simply pure evil” is laugh-out-loud ridiculous. Remember how scary she was when Tate came to visit Holly? You know, the baby she came out of Theresa’s womb give birth to ?? But… I can see her being that hypocritical.

On the DiMera couch, Kristen looks at EJ in disbelief. He stares blankly ahead with tight lips

  • All this talk with Stefan about Theresa being part of the Brady family restaurant dynasty and Stephanie being his cousin really makes me want them to have her interact with his family.
  • I liked that Bonnie saw Theresa right away as the same gold digger she was and told her, “As long as you love her as much as her money.” Honestly, it’s fair.

What do you think? How would you rate the drafting of the strike? Are you excited that it’s over or nervous for what’s to come? Let me know below!
