A global computer outage apparently triggered by software distributed by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike caused widespread global outages Thursday night and Friday morning.

The problem affected airline communications, forcing the Federal Aviation Administration to ground major carriers in the United States, including American Airlines, Delta and United Airlines.

Microsoft, which hosts cloud services for businesses and governments, said it was experiencing service outages.

Microsoft released a statement saying the issue was under investigation while warning that users “may be unable to access various Microsoft 365 apps and services.”

Although the exact sequence of events remains unclear, the issue has had wide resonance.

Airports in Japan and Australia, 911 hotlines in Alaska, the London Stock Exchange and hospitals in England have all faced major disruptions.

Entire businesses are reporting being offline and merchants are unable to process payments in some cities.

News agencies, such as Sky News in Australia, have also reported being taken offline entirely.
