Suzuka, Japan: Williams pilot, Carlos Sainz, was sentenced to a fine of 20,000 euros ($ 21,910), with half suspended, after being late for the national anthem at the Formula 1 Grand Prix on Sunday due to a “stomach problem”.
The stewards noted that the sanctions guidelines indicated a fine of 60,000 euros for the offense but recognized the discomfort of Spanish in attenuation.
“The driver said that before the anthem, he experienced discomfort due to a stomach problem that delayed his appearance on the grid,” they said, adding that a doctor had confirmed the problem and provided medication.
“Notwithstanding the above, displaying respect for the national anthem is a high priority and all parties must consider each possibility in planning to be in the hymn position in the required time,” added the stewards.
“Consequently, a penalty similar to that imposed for a violation similar in Canada in 2024 is imposed.”
Sainz had started the race in 15th place after a drop in three -seater grid to prevent the Ferrari from the world champion seven times Lewis Hamilton in qualification. The Spaniard finished the race in 14th.
