Why was Ncuti Gatwa absent from Doctor Who season 14 episode 4? Showrunner explained

Considered one of the all-time greatest performances in its history, Doctor Who’s final episode, 73 Yards, of its 14th season took things up a notch from last week’s third episode. One of the reasons it stood out was the rare feature of the Fifteenth Doctor (played by Ncuti Gatwa), whereas it was more of a solo journey for Ruby Sunday (played by Millie Gibson).

Since the end of the Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials, Gatwa has appeared in every episode, with 73 Yards being the exception. As fans and audiences tried to make sense of it through the storyline, showrunner Russell T Davies provided an explanation for it. Check it out below.

What is the plot of Doctor Who Season 14 Episode 4, 73 Yards?

In Davies’ second stint as showrunner, the series tends to lean more toward the fantasy genre than its sci-fi standard. Following the Fourteenth Doctor’s invocation of the salt superstition in Wild Blue Yonder, an increasing number of events have been linked to magical occurrences. Another illustration of this change in the Doctor Who formula is the fairy circle of 73 Yards. The Doctor disappears shortly after breaking the circle in the first few minutes of the series, specifically just after Sunday reads a scroll that says, “I miss you.”

Afterwards, Sunday steals the show as the companion finds herself at the center of a curse that sends her loved ones running for their lives and a dark figure chasing her. This episode is more of a Sunday-centric story.

What does Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies say about Ncuti Gatwa’s absence?

Davies revealed that the reason for the Fifteenth Doctor’s disappearance was scheduling problems. He told the BBC’s Doctor Who: Unleashed that filming of episode 4 had been moved to the first production block as Gatwa was filming season 4 of Sex Education at the same time season 14 was scheduled to begin . This resulted in Sunday becoming the center of the narrative which also marked Gibson’s feature debut in the series.

“This whole thing is partly because Ncuti was busy filming Sex Education. We had to start filming, so we took the opportunity to say, let’s focus on Millie as Ruby. And it gives you the opportunity to explore his character. This gives us a chance to explore her as an actress. And it’s really enriching. It really pays off. She does the most brilliant work,” Davies explained.
