Real Madrid’s goal victory against the rivals of the city of Atletico Madrid in the Champions League was tired by controversy after Julian Alvarez’s penalty kick was excluded. Real Madrid had won the first leg 2-1, but the first-minute strike by Connor Gallagher at the Metropolitano stadium on Wednesday allowed Atletico to draw a level on the aggregates, forcing the match in overtime and then in penalties.
Real Madrid finally won the 4-2 penalty shot, but not before much drama. Alvarez d’Atletico was the fourth to take a penalty after the convert of the first three successfully.
The Argentina striker also converted his strike to make it 2-2 but not without slipping and falling. While fans of Atletico began to celebrate, Polish referee Szymon Marciniak stressed that the sanction of Alvarez had been excluded by the assistant video referee (VAR).
The replays showed that his left foot had established a minor contact with the ball before shooting it with his right.
Angel Correa de Fede Valverde and Atletico then scored the next ones to do 3-2 in favor of Real.
Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak then saved Lucas Vazquez’s kick to give Atletico a little hope, but Marcos Llorente’s Miss left him to Antonio Rudiger to mark and help Real Madrid qualify for the quarterfinals.
Article 14.1 of the laws of IFAB (BOARD International Football Association) of the game governs sanctions. According to the rule, “the kicker should not play the ball again until he touched another player.”
This is why Alvarez’s penalty kick was canceled because he took two keys.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone was naturally livid with the Var decision and questioned the controversial appeal.
“The referee said that when Julian arrived at the penalty spot, he had touched the ball with his standing foot, but the ball did not move,” said Simeone. “I have never seen a penalty where they called the Var, but well, they would have seen that he touched it. I want to believe that they saw that he touched it.
“Have you seen it touch the ball twice?” Please anyone who was present in the stadium and saw it touch the ball twice, the ball moving, please, I raise your hand. I don’t see anyone with my hand raised, so that’s all I have to say … the next question.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti was satisfied with the decision taken.
“They detected it. When we realized that there was this doubt, they had already detected it on Var,” said Ancelotti.
“I saw him, I think he touches him with his left foot, a second touch.”
