For some technology founders, building such a good product, it lasts forever can look like dreams. The CEO and co -founder of Windsurf, Varun Mohan, wants his startup in AI regularly explodes his product.
“We should cannibalize the existing state of our product every six to 12 months,” he said in an episode of “Lenny’s Podcast” published on Sunday. “This should almost make the formal factor of the existing existing product stupid.”
Windsurf, formerly known as codeium, builds AI tools that allow developers to write code using natural language prompts.
The company is part of a wave of startups embracing the “coding of the atmosphere”, a term invented by the co -founder of Openai Andrej Karpathy to describe the invites of IA to write code. As Karpathy says, developers can “give in to vibrations” and “even forget the code”.
Founded in 2021, Windisurf, based in Silicon Valley, raised more than $ 200 million in venture capital funding, according to Pitchbook data. The company was evaluated at $ 1.25 billion in an agreement led by the General Catalyst last year, with the support of Greenoaks and Kleiner Perkins.
While other companies refine existing products according to user comments, Mohan thinks that “the value of this will depreciate very quickly”. The co -founder said that the forest board must keep one step on the requests of customers.
“It is these longer-term efforts within the company that almost disrupt the existing product which is ultimately the reason why we are going to succeed,” he added.
“Doing things”
Mohan said that the manufacture of big bets was part of Windsurf cultivation.
“We made money on it,” he said, referring to the previous Windisurf product. “And we were just like,” hey, we’re going to take a completely tour. “”
At the time, the company had already raised $ 28 million. But staying concentrated was more important than keeping momentum on a product they no longer believed, he said.
Startups are almost guaranteed to fail if they continue the next great thing while focusing on a product that they do not think they are precious, he added.
Windsurf began to create a virtualization infrastructure of the graphic processing unit, then moved to an integrated development environment plugin and finally launched its own FDI.
IDEs are software platforms that provide all the services that developers need to perform the applications they create, including automation and debugging tools.
Each quarter of work came with a risk. Mohan said it had also come with the acceptance of being mistaken in things is part of the correction of things.
“Each year is a new lease for us,” he said.
“It’s almost a new way for us to test a brand new set of hypotheses. And perhaps we were wrong on our original assumptions in the first place,” he added.
Windsurf did not respond to a request for comments from Business Insider.
