Why New York Fashion Week Isn’t Dead

Despite what some subgroups, influencers, and a new study have to say about New York’s influence as a fashion capital, the city’s biannual celebration of fashion and design is far from dead. Sure, some big names no longer show and the days of gathering around Bryant Park and Lincoln Center are long gone, but in their wake have sprung up new and exciting fashion showcases that keep audiences on their toes. (And now, at least we have the CFDA shuttle to get us around in an eco-friendly way—progress!)

Recently I had the chance to interview the famous designer and latest addition to the The Real Housewives of New York New York Fashion Week host Rebecca Minkoff talked all things reality TV, fashion, and, of course, NYFW. “It’s always been the place where these new, beautiful designers are making a name for themselves and showing alongside the biggest brands in the industry. People can connect with that at NYFW,” Minkoff told me. “It’s not dying. It’s evolving.”

Here at In styleWe strive to shine a spotlight on the designers, brands, and talents that continue to push the boundaries, and nowhere is that exhilarating energy more readily available than in the collections showcased throughout NYFW. New York City mainstays Proenza Schouler and Ralph Lauren kicked things off for SS25 in style with shows in Soho and the Hamptons, respectively, while European staples like Off-White, Nanushka, Paloma Spain, and Pieter Müller’s Alaïa traveled across the pond to debut their latest collections in the Big Apple this year. Meanwhile, a new vanguard of designers including Bach Mai, Colin Locascio, Jackson Weiderhoeft, and Grace Ling are sure to keep things interesting with their bold propositions for next season.

Sure, our editors and writers will keep you updated on the looks that will make us rethink our wardrobes, the accessory trends we’ll swoon over and indulge in, and the celebs we’ll be talking about (seriously, if anyone has any news on J.Lo making her NYFW debut post-Affleck, my inbox is open), but this season, we’ll also be shining a spotlight on the brands creating the next viral must-haves, the brands capturing Gen Z’s ever-fleeting attention span, and the designers redefining and reimagining what runway shows—and by extension—NYFW can look like.

Long live NYFW!
