Buckingham Palace revealed that the royal family is postponing public appearances following the British Prime Minister Rishi Sunakthe announcement of general elections on July 4.

“Following the Prime Minister’s statement this afternoon calling for a general election, the Royal Family will, in accordance with normal procedure, postpone any engagements which may appear to distract or divert attention from the election campaign.” declared the Palace in a May 22 press release obtained by The telegraph. “Their Majesties offer their sincere apologies to all those who may be affected.”

This is the first general election held in the United Kingdom in almost five years. And if you’re wondering how it works, the official Parliament website explains that these elections give people the chance to vote for their local MP.

“This person will represent a local area (constituency) in the House of Commons for a period of up to five years,” the website states. “There is a choice between several candidates in each constituency. Some will be the local candidates of national political parties. The candidate who receives the most votes will become their MP.”

“The political party that wins the most seats in the House of Commons in a general election usually forms the new government,” he later adds. “Its leader becomes Prime Minister.”
