Why isn’t Harry Maguire playing for England at Euro 2024? Man United defender ‘gutted’ to miss tournament

Harry Maguire is not at Euro 2024 with England this summer.

The Manchester United defender has been a mainstay of Gareth Southgate’s side in recent years and was named in the 33-man provisional squad.

However, Maguire will not play any role for the Three Lions in Germany after being one of seven players selected for the tournament.

Jack Grealish and James Maddison were two major omissions and they missed their chance due to their form last season.

But it was a different reason for Maguire…

Why is Maguire not at Euro 2024?

Maguire has featured in every major England tournament under Southgate but failed to recover from a calf injury this summer.

He has not played since April after suffering a muscle problem in training which kept him out of United’s FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

Maguire’s fitness issues meant he would not have been available until the Euro 2024 last 16 at the earliest and Southgate made the difficult decision not to risk him.

Confirming he was left out of the squad earlier this month due to injury, the centre-back released a statement on social media.

He wrote: “I’m devastated not to be selected to play for England at the Euros this summer. Despite my best efforts, I haven’t been able to overcome a calf injury.

“Maybe I pushed myself too hard to try and get there. I’m just absolutely drained. For me, representing England is the greatest honour.

“It means everything to me. If I can’t help the team as a player, I’ll support them as a fan – and the rest of the country. Go win, boys.

“Then I will return to managing the Manchester United medical team in order to prepare for next season.”

England boss Southgate then explained the difficult decision he made by questioning whether he could have risked Maguire’s injury.

“I think we took nine (defenders) in the last two tournaments when I watched, so I think we have the same (depth),” he explained.

“That’s part of the reason why, ultimately, we couldn’t take Harry Maguire because we would have had to take a 10th (defender) and that balance wouldn’t have been good. That would have left us running out of other areas of the field.

“Harry made some progress but it was complicated and we certainly wouldn’t have had him in the group stage.

“There were too many obstacles to overcome without really knowing where we could get.

“Given we don’t have a perfect health check for the rest of the backline either, the decision became that we needed cover and players fit and ready to play from the start.

“It was another very difficult decision. You know how I feel about Harry Maguire, what he did for England and what he did for me as manager.”
