As proactive climate initiatives fall by the wayside within insurance companies, Nicole believes there are ways to get involved to help those living in high-risk areas:
• “Keep an eye out for state bills addressing climate adaptation, disaster resilience, or insurance reform, and support these efforts through public comment or by contacting your representatives,” says Nicole.
• “Most states have insurance regulators that oversee industry practices,” adds Nicole. “Individuals can advocate for stronger consumer protections, transparency, and incentives for resilience through these organizations.”
• “Join consumer advocacy groups – organizations like the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) or local coalitions often campaign for fair insurance practices and support for climate adaptation,” says Nicole .
• “And advocate for mandatory public disclosure of climate risks by insurers to increase accountability,” adds Nicole.
