Doja CatThe popular hit “Vegas” will not be a candidate for the 2023 Oscars.
The song – which appeared as the first single from Baz Luhrmannit is Elvis featuring Austin Butler—is not eligible for the Oscars, E! The news confirms.
Why? Well, “Vegas,” written by Doja Cat and produced by Roger Chahayed and Yeti beatscontained material interpolated from “Hound Dog”, the 1956 Elvis Presley track created by Jerry Leiber and mike stoler. However, Academy rules state that any submission for Best Original Song must consist of “words and music, both original and written specifically for the motion picture”, and its track includes elements of a pre-existing song.
As “Vegas” did not appear among the 147 scores and 82 songs deemed eligible for voting on December 12, it is out of contention for Oscar gold. The list, according to Varietywas made available to Academy members, who will then narrow the choices down to a shortlist before the five official nominees are revealed in January 2023. (Other disqualifications included the original scores for Tar and Top Gun: Maverick.)
