It was seen as a symbol of the people who founded the country, and as Republicans rejected a royalist narrative preferring France’s true roots, the rooster became a symbol representing the country’s origins.

During the First World War, it was used as a symbol of France’s resistance and bravery on the battlefields.

Its growing popularity has allowed it to remain popular ever since and the rooster has remained a symbol of modern France.

It is now seen on every football and rugby jersey in the country and also appears on postage stamps, war memorials and logos.
