If only Warner Bros. could reprint money in the way scientists reprint Robert Pattinson’s body in “Mickey 17”. The clumsy science fiction comedy has ignited $ 24 million abroad and more than $ 50 million worldwide, a decent start for an original film in the current theatrical landscape. It cost too much for more profit during this life.
The film classified R, directed by Bong Joon Ho and with Robert Pattinson, opened its doors on February 28 in Korea (the country of origin of Bong) and has since brought in $ 34.2 million abroad and $ 53.3 million worldwide. These ticket sales include a drinking start of $ 19.1 million in North America.
Credit to Bong, known for his acclaimed films as the winner of the best film “Parasite” and “Snowpiercer” and Pattinson, the A-Lister who sailed on successful franchises like “Twilight”, “Harry Potter” and “The Batman” between a handful of indications, for the opening of “Mickey 17” above $ 50 million. It is an impressive launch for an odyssey of the fresh and offbeat space about a disposable employee whose body is able to regenerate for science.
Here is the problem: Warner Bros. has granted $ 118 million to spending (reproducing Pattinson is not cheap!) And an additional $ 80 million in marketing. If “Mickey 17” costs, let’s say, $ 50 million – not nothing for a social satire listed in R with an arthouse flash – the film would be well positioned at this stage of its theatrical race. However, taking into account the economy of the film, “Mickey 17” must earn around $ 275 million in the world to enter the dark during its big screen, according to rival leaders with knowledge of similar productions.
“Mickey 17” addressed almost all the main theatrical markets. The most paid territories include Korea with $ 14.6 million after two release weekends, followed by France with $ 2.9 million to start and the United Kingdom with $ 2.7 million to start. The film failed in China with 1.3 million dollars at its beginnings. IMAX, Dolby and other large premium formats represented 47% of opening up weekend ticket sales.
Adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey7”, the film follows Pattinson as a consumable worker who can be reprinted (allowing the actor to play several versions of the same character). He sent a human expedition to colonize the world of inhospitable ice known as Niflheim, where he dies again and again. Complications arise when one of the mickeys is presumed dead and that a replacement duplicate tries to take its place. Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo complete the casting. The scores and audience notices were mixed with a note “B” on Cinemascore and 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Elsewhere at the International Box-Office, the adventure of Disney Marvel “Captain America: Brave New World” added $ 9.2 million in 52 territories. The superhero suite will end the weekend with $ 194.2 million at the national level and $ 370.8 million worldwide, a solid count except – like “Mickey 17” – its excessive price will make it difficult to forge a path to profitability. The Goard cost more than $ 180 million to produce and around $ 100 million to promote to the world public.
