Why do Scottish fans sing “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie”? Tartan Army adopts disco classic as unofficial anthem

Scotland’s fans have been some of the best at Euro 2024, and whenever they are, you’ll hear ‘Yes Sir, I Can Boogie’.

The 1970s disco classic was adopted by the Tartan Army as their unofficial anthem.

It’s a great track, and one that Scottish fans have now made it a must-have, one that will be heard for as long as the Tartan Army competes at Euro 2024.

Why do Scottish fans sing “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie”?

The origins of the Scots using this song began in November 2020, when Scotland beat Serbia on penalties to seal a place at the delayed Euro 2020.

Immediately after the match, a video emerged of all the players singing and dancing to the song, meaning it became an instant hit with the Tartan Army.

Former Scotland international Andrew Considine also had a role to play as he was part of an infamous video in 2015 for his stag party dressed in drag singing ‘Yes Sir, I Can Boogie’.

He was an unused substitute that night in Serbia, and his stag video was one of the reasons the Scotland players started the song.

The hit was originally performed by Spanish duo Baccara, but it has taken on a new lease of life in Scotland, with a campaign set up to take it to number one.

It became the summer soundtrack for Scotland throughout their Euro 2020 campaign, and has remained a popular song in their repertoire.

Immediately after the song suddenly regained a lot of popularity, Maria Mendiola, who formed Baccara with Mayte Mateos, spoke to BBC Scotland about it.

She said: “With this pandemic, I’ve been sitting at home, and it’s energized me in ways you can’t imagine.

“I will always thank the Scottish team and especially Andy Considine for making me so happy after 43 years.

“I saw all the posts and everyone was calling me. I was delighted. I thanked the Scotland team and spoke to Andy on Instagram. He had such kind words.”

So it’s a bizarre origin story, but it created a song that brings back happy memories for Scottish fans as Euro 2020 was the first European Championship they qualified for since 1996.

And as they watch their crucial Euro 2024 match against Hungary, live on talkSPORT, you can bet many Scotland fans will be boogie-woogieing.

What are the lyrics?

The most important refrain is this:

“Oooohh! Yes sir, I can boogie,
But I need a certain song,
I can boogie, boogie woogie all night long,
Yes sir, I can dance,
If you stay you can’t go wrong,
I can boogie, boogie woogie all night long. »
