Colin Farrell made the difficult decision to put his 21 -year -old son, James, who suffers from Angelman syndrome, in a long -term care establishment.
“It’s delicate – some parents will say:” I want to take care of my child myself “, and I respect this,” Farrell, 48, told Candis Magazine (via The Independent).
The actor “Penguin” explained to the point of sale that he terrified what will happen to James if something happened to him suddenly or James’ mother, Kim Bordenave.
“But my horror would be, and if I had a heart attack tomorrow, and, God preserves us, James’ mother, Kim, has a car accident and she is taken too – and then James is alone?”
He added that James would become a “state service” and that they would not have a say in the place where he goes without a place in place.
The ex, who copares James, are looking together for a long -term place where they can visit him and “get out sometimes”.
“We want him to find a place where he can have a full and happy life, where he feels connected,” said the actor “Banshees of Inisherin”.
According to Mayo Clinic, Angelman syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that causes delayed development, speech and balance problems, mental handicap and convulsions.
Farrell announced in August 2024 that he began a foundation to honor his “magical” son.
“I want the world to be nice to James,” he told people at the time. “I want the world to treat him with kindness and respect.”
Farrell, who is also the father of the 15 -year -old son, Henry, explained that he could not ask his son if he wanted to make the foundation.
“I mean, I can. I speak to James as if he was 20 years old and have a perfect mastery with the English language and the cognitive capacity adapted to age. But I cannot discern a particular response from him to find out if he is comfortable with all of this or not.
“So I have to make a call by knowing James’ mind and what kind of young man he is and the kindness he has in his heart,” he said.
During the same interview, he remembers melted in tears when James took his first steps before his 4th birthday.
The actor also attributes to James to have helped his sobriety trip.
“Part of the fuel that I had used to remove alcohol and drugs and everything that was learning that he had health problems,” Farrell told Daily Mail in October 2024. “All children need their parents – or a parent or grandparent or someone – to take care of them.
“One of the things James taught me was to access myself a desire to live, even if it was at the start more than I thought that I wanted to live to be there for him,” he said.
Farrell and Bordenave asked for a guardianship of James in 2021 before his 18th birthday.
