Badminton sport can opt for a radical change to make the game shorter and more attractive for the younger generations. The World Badminton Federation (BWF) should test the 3×15 rating system in 2025 and if experience succeeds, it could become a permanent rule.
Currently, Badminton uses the 3×21 rating system.
What is a 3×15 rating system?
Badminton matches, currently, are a competition for the best match with each match offering 21 points. In the 3×15 rating system, the game will be won by the player who first scores 15 points instead of 21 years. The matches will remain a matter the best of three games.

Why does BWF want to use the 3×15 rating system?

The BWF added that a survey between the main stakeholders in each tournament and a global survey of all members, athlete commissions (players), technical managers and business partners will be completed at the end of the period of test.
The final decision to make the 3×15 permanent rating system will not be taken until 2026.
“Pending a result of the tests and the results of the survey, the BWF council will make a final decision to propose this new system to the annual general meeting of the BWF 2026.”
Badminton continues experimentation with a rating system
The BWF has experienced various rating systems over the years. The rating system increased from 15×3 to 7×5 and finally to the current 21×3 system.
Initially, the matches followed a format for the best of three, with singles, doubles and all double matches for 15 points, while female singles used an 11 -point system. Only the player in service could score a point.
In 2002, the 7×5 rating system was briefly introduced, but later replaced by the rally points system (21×3) in 2006.
Between these changes, the BWF also experienced an 11×5 format in 2014. It was proposed again in 2021 but failed to obtain enough votes at the 82nd Aga BWF.
