England begin their Nations League campaign this afternoon, but they will be playing in a different division to last time out.
The Three Lions will take on the Republic of Ireland this Saturday night in their first group game of the tournament, live on talkSPORT.
This year, Lee Carsley’s team will play in Group 2 of League B alongside Ireland, Finland and Greece.
It’s a step backwards from last campaign, when England were in League A, and here’s why that’s the case…
England are in League B of the Nations League after being relegated.
The Three Lions lost 1-0 to Italy in September 2022 and the result confirmed they were going to be relegated.
It was a torrid campaign for Gareth Southgate’s side who failed to win any of their League A Group 3 games, finishing bottom.
Two draws against Germany and two defeats against Hungary, including a 4-0 home loss, were damaging results.
Their defeat to Italy then led to relegation to the second tier of the competition.
After that defeat, Southgate and his team were booed by their supporters and the former boss admitted the results were not good enough.
He said: “I understand the reaction at the end. This is the result we got in this competition. It’s an understandable emotional reaction.”
This means life after Southgate will now begin in League B under the caretaker management of Carsley.
England therefore cannot win the Nations League this season, as only League A teams can do so.
But the goal will be to go straight back up and below you can read how they can get promoted…
Finishing top of their League B group would guarantee them automatic promotion to League A.
However, if England do not finish top, they still have a chance of promotion.
By finishing second, the Three Lions will enter a two-game play-off which, if they win, will secure them qualification.
