A decades-long water dispute between the United States and Mexico is becoming increasingly urgent in Texas communities that rely on the Rio Grande. Their leaders are now demanding that the Mexican government share the water or face a reduction in U.S. aid.
In a deepening diplomatic row, Mexico is behind in its obligations under an 80-year-old treaty that governs cross-border flows of the drought-stricken Colorado River. For decades, the country has resisted water deliveries to the United States from its Rio Grande Basin reservoirs as it faces its own drought pressures on thirsty and valuable crops intended for sale on the other side of the border.
