Why a Des Moines Restaurant Stays Open on Christmas Day

Angry Goldfish, a restaurant in Des Moines, has been open for Christmas for seven years in a row. “We’re as busy as we can be,” owner Clark Way said. Clark Way says he sees a lot of the same people every Christmas. “It’s kind of become a tradition for them,” Way said. Clark Way and his wife, Renee Way, also own the Dam Pub. Both restaurants were open and very busy over Christmas. But why stay open during the holidays? Earlier this month, a Facebook post on the Angry Goldfish page explained why. Renee Way says it’s a way to be there for those who have nowhere else to go. “I think the most important thing for us is that they’re not left alone at home. They’re not alone,” Renee Way said. Neither restaurant requires its employees to work during the holidays. “We decided we weren’t going to have our employees work. We just said, ‘Hey, it’s voluntary.'” Renee Way said. “So every Christmas Day you can probably get a hot meal at the Angry Goldfish and the Dam Pub.
