The view had a lot of views on Carrie Underwood’s announcement that she would perform “America The Beautiful” at Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony on January 20, although all of the co-hosts defended her right to do so TO DO.
“I support her,” moderator Whoopi Goldberg said during today’s Hot Topics segment. “If I believe I have the right to decide to go play somewhere, I believe she has the same right.” Goldberg then added that she wasn’t “particularly interested” in the event — “I won’t watch” — and hinted at the day’s other meaning, Martin Luther King Day.
Republican co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin said she supports Underwood and opposes canceling “people’s livelihoods because we don’t like their policies.”
“If you have a problem,” Griffin said, “you make your complaint by not downloading his songs and going to his concerts.” She added that “from a business point of view, it’s not a bad move for Carrie Underwood” who could become an “icon of MAGA and the American right” and “make a lot of money from it.”
» Joy Behar replied, crying: “I see. She went on to ask about Underwood: “How do you love your country, and support and normalize someone who is a convicted felon and really wants to destroy the country, in my opinion.” She added, however, that “I wouldn’t be one to say ‘don’t do it’ because I believe in freedom of speech.” But personally, I wouldn’t do it. No one asked me, but that’s another story.
Sunny Hostin sided with Behar. “I think art is art and you have the right to perform wherever you want, but I agree with you Joy. I can’t sing and I haven’t been asked, but if they asked me it would be a definite no.
Goldberg began continuing the debate by mentioning other artists scheduled to appear at the inauguration, but then paused and said she would postpone that discussion until tomorrow. She may have been referring to the Village People, whose gay anthem “YMCA” is a favorite of Trump and his rally attendees.
