Who really makes Land Rover engines?

Who really makes Land Rover engines?

The owners of Land Rover expect an uneven British style and refinement. But lift the hood on certain models and you could find a surprise stamped directly in the metal: Ford Motor Company.

The creator of a mechanic and the creator of the Larry Law automobile (@ Larry.law94) is all smiling in a viral clip where he reveals the origin of the critical components of Land Rover to potential owners.

“This engine can say Land Rover, but on the side, it says Ford Motor Company. So you think you get a kind of Porsche,” he said, looking under the hood of a Land Rover sitting in his repair bay. “This is a 5.0. It is a Ford 302. ”

When Ford and Land Rover shared parts

In the world of automotive manufacturing, luxury brands sometimes borrow engineering from broader platforms, especially when cost sharing or business property comes into play.

After the acquisition of Ford in 2000 of Land Rover, several V – 8 engines in Land Rover models were produced in Ford Facilities. The AJ-V8 family, designed by Jaguar, is a perfect example. Despite its British design, production occurred in a “plant – with a plant plant” at the Ford Bridgend engines factory in Wales.

The Bridgend factory, active from 1980 to 2020, produced more than 22 million engines in its lifetime and served Ford, Jaguar, Volvo and Land Rover operations. In August 2020, Land Rover confirmed that she would move the production of house engines after closing Bridgend.

The 5.0-liter engine to which Larry refers is most likely the AJ-V8 (AJ133), which propelled certain Range Rover models between 2009 and 2012. Although its displacement corresponds to Ford 302 Cubic inch of Ford V-8, the AJ-V8 is a distinct design, which makes it more cousin than a direct descendant. Motor lovers point out that these engines were built in Ford facilities, their interns have been explicitly developed for Jaguar and Land Rover applications.

The AJ-V8 also has direct fuel injection and a hemispherical type combustion chamber, which the mechanic compared to Chrysler’s “HEMI” design. Although the comparison captures the general shape and the placement of the injector, it is more a colorful analogy than a technical correspondence. Many Land Rover models using this engine have also been associated with automatic transmissions from Ford, stressing the level of sharing of components between the two brands during and after the property of Ford.

The sharing of the components of the powertrain is a strategy that demonstrates the intelligent economy. Using a common engine platform, manufacturers reduce development costs and take advantage of proven systems. The use by Ford of the installation of Bridgend illustrated it: Jaguar (and later Land Rover) could use the existing production lines without setting up a completely distinct factory.

After the closure of Bridgend, JLR has invested in its engine production capacities, providing operations in its Wolverhampton Engine Manufacturing Center.

Why this counts for the owners

For Land Rover owners, the connection with Ford has real implications for the maintenance, repair and perception of the brand. On the positive side, the use of FORD internal interns can facilitate the source of replacement parts, in particular on the markets with a large network of Ford services. Many independent mechanisms already know the Ford V8 systems, which can result in shorter repair times and potentially reduce labor costs. The components themselves also bear history after years of use in other vehicles, lending them a certain degree of deceased sustainability.

However, the discovery that the engine of a luxury SUV carries the Ford brand can be disturbing for certain buyers who expect fully tailor -made engineering under the Land Rover badge. Payment of premium prices for a vehicle that shares significant mechanical DNA with cheaper models also raises questions about the perceived value. However, in practice, integration and refinement often remain firmly in the luxury category.

The Ford – Land Rover collaboration is far from unique in the automotive world. In the entire industry, luxury car manufacturers have long been based on sisters companies or business group resources to find components and share technology.

Aston Martin, for example, incorporated the apparatus and electronics derived from Ford in several of his models, a legacy of the old partial participation of Ford in the brand. Bentley, on the other hand, has built vehicles on the modular platforms of the Volkswagen group and used powertrain on VW, mixing high-end crafts with shared engineering foundations.

These practices are rooted in the economy. The sharing of components and the platform allows manufacturers to maintain the identity of the brand while carrying out the profitability of large-scale production.

For owners curious about the mechanical inheritance of their own vehicle, there are several ways to trace the origin of an engine. The wine decoding tools, available online or through dealerships, can identify the type of specific engine and where it has been built. A visual inspection of the engine block can also reveal stamped marks such as “Ford Motor Company” which directly indicate its provenance.

In addition, the examination of factory service manuals, catalogs of official parts or detailed service history may reveal information on parts suppliers and manufacturing sources, offering a clearer image of the vehicle line.
