WHO negotiators agree to extend pandemic negotiations for up to a year – POLITICO

Over the past two years of negotiations, countries have become entrenched in their positions on intellectual property and the sharing of vaccines and medicines during the next health crisis, making progress toward a meaningful agreement seemingly impossible.

African countries initially insisted that a deal be reached this year, while the United States discussed a longer extension, “one to two years.”

An agreement was initially expected to be adopted this week, but negotiators failed to resolve their disagreements in time, including over intellectual property and the sharing of medicines and vaccines.

The resolution will also allow countries to rotate bureau members, with the committee of officials moderating negotiations.
