Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu was appointed chief minister designate of Himachal Pradesh today, following the major drama of Pratibha Singh’s supporters in Shimla. He is likely to be sworn in tomorrow.
Here is your 5-point guide to the designated Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh:
Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the third time MLA for Nadaun in Hamirpur district, is a lawyer by training and emerged from the ranks of the Congress wing, the National Student Union of India (NSUI).
Of very different descent from ex-royal Virbhadra Singh, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, as an activist from the University of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla, headed the NSUI state unit in the late 1980s.
A graduate of a full-time political career, he served as president of the state’s Youth Congress in the 2000s.
Although hailing from another district in another part of the state, he won municipal elections twice in Shimla and then was appointed as the State Unit Secretary in 2008, eventually rising to the top of the state unit.
He was replaced as head of the state unit in 2019 by Kuldeep Rathore, ostensibly in a compromise against factionalism.
