In a significant boost to the India athletics program, the India Athletics Federation (AFI) has appointed the double Olympic medalist Sergey Aleksandrovich Makarov as a new coach foreign to the javelin for the ‘Indian national team.
Sergey Makarov, a legendary Russian javelin launcher, will work with Indian athletes, including the double winner of the Neeraj Chopra Olympic Medal, Kishore Jena, Cancel Rani and other best javelin launchers. He will also supervise the training of young athletes for young people and to come to the national camp.
In particular, Neeraj Chopra will continue to work with his personal trainer, Jan Zelezny, a former world record holder. Zelezny Guide Chopra on a case needed since the retirement of his former coach, Dr. Klaus Bartonietz.
As a new javelin coach, Sergey Makarov’s first great assignment will be at the world athletics championships in 2025 in Tokyo, scheduled for September. He will supervise the Indian athletic athletics program for the new Olympic cycle, bringing his richness of experience and expertise to the role.
“The vast experience of Aleksandrovich as an art and coach is about to considerably raise the development of the javelin throwing in our country,” said Radhakrishnan Nair, the national Indian athletics coach.

Who is Sergey Makarov?
Sergey Makarov is a highly accomplished javelin launcher, with a vegetable career that includes two Olympic bronze medals, won at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and Athens 2004. He is also a former world champion in male javelin.
Makarov’s best personal launch of 92.61 m, reached in 2002, is still the national dossier in his country. At 51, Makarov brings a richness of knowledge and experience to his new role, and his appointment should have a significant impact on the athletics program of India.
The position of India’s foreign javelin coach has a story of attracting high -level talents. Before the appointment of Makarov, the German legend Uwe Hohn, which holds the eternal world record in Throw Javelin, played the same role from 2017 to 2021.
