British investments in other organizations, such as GAVI Vaccine Alliance and the Global Fund Epidemic Group, will be replenished when they are renewed – although they are also generous this time is an open question. The FCDO is under pressure, like all departments, to reduce spending as part of the expenses of Chancellors Rachel Reeves.
“Interesting in all of this, what do leaders of developing countries want?” said Malcolm Chalmers, Deputy Managing Director of the RUSI International Affairs Affairs. “Often, their priorities concern more economic growth, development and infrastructure and energy than poverty reduction (roughly) poverty and social protection, on which the United Kingdom has done a lot.”
“In many British policy, the United Kingdom and Africa (are) seen mainly in terms of aid,” said Chalmers. “There is one element of what Lammy is, which consists in going beyond aid, which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is traditionally – and because of the merger, that the story of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is more dominant.
“When the DFID was a separate department, it has always been defined by having a goal that was not linked to wider geopolitical objectives, it was a poverty reduction.”
National interests
A major component of FCDO development works consists in approaching the deep causes that force people to flee their homes, including climate change and conflicts. An emphasis on and funding for this marks a change compared to the recent years, when British expenses in terms of conflict prevention and resolution increased from 4% of the aid budget to 1%.
However, while conflicts and security were a major theme of the Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under Lammy, next month, there is a cliff advantage for dozens of international security programs, including on the counter -Terrorism, funded by the British government.
