While Star Wars Outlaws will have you running and hiding from Imperial officers through its GTA-style search system, its director ominously teases that “there are Death Troopers for a reason.”

As an open world adventure, Star Wars Outlaws promises a lot of freedom when it comes to exploring its selection of planets, but it also looks like it will give us some level of choice in how to deal with the Imperial officers who enforce the GTA style research system.

In a new interview with IGNGame director Mathias Karlson says we’ll be able to run, hide, and even bribe Imperial officers to get out of trouble with the Empire, but it doesn’t seem like everything will be smooth sailing. “The game has a lot of room for escalation and de-escalation,” he begins.

“It’s up to you whether you want to try to hide or maybe bribe a slightly corrupt Imperial officer in a city somewhere, or try to hyperjump to another region of space. But you’ll feel it,” he continues. “And let’s just say there are Death Troopers for a reason.”

Well, that’s worrying. Karlson doesn’t elaborate on the subject, so it’s unclear when exactly the Death Troopers might make an appearance, though the way he mentions them makes it sound like they might be there to make sure we can’t easily outflank the Empire every time. The Death Troopers are a bunch of people who know what they’re doing, after all, and running into one should never feel like running into a standard Stormtrooper that can be dispatched in seconds.

In the same interview, Karlson also discusses the Outlaws’ reputation system. As you explore the galaxy, protagonist Kay Vess will be able to build positive relationships with different crime syndicates, and in addition to offering bonuses like easy access to territory they control, your friends “might join you and help you” if they happen to cross paths with you while you’re dealing with the Empire. Hopefully, they’ll still have our backs if we’re faced with a Death Trooper.
