A polar vortex is expected to blanket most of the continental United States over the coming week, and parts of the Deep South are expected to experience freezing temperatures.
Nearly 300 million Americans are expected to experience a violent arctic blast that will bring snow and freezing temperatures, according to the National Weather Service. In a tweet from the service, the strong cold front will bring rain and snow showers to the Great Lakes and dangerously cold wind chills to the Deep South.
The next round of severe winter weather follows other winter storms that left heavy snow and ice across the country.
In the South, more than 40 million people were under winter storm warnings, while areas from northeastern Kansas to north-central Missouri saw snowfall of up to 15 inches. . But the latest polar vortex is expected to affect much of the United States. Here’s what you need to know.
Here’s a look at the weather forecast for areas of the United States that could be hit hardest by snow and ice amid the impending winter storm:
Frost alert:Arctic blast will bring coldest air of the season from Dallas to Boston
Parts of North Texas will see some chance of accumulating snow through the weekend and early next week.
According to the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth, areas north and northwest of the Dallas-Forth Worth region have the highest chance of seeing more than 0.1 inch of snow.
In the nation’s capital, the next winter storm is expected to leave up to six inches of snow in the region.
Cold temperatures also forced President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony to be moved indoors Monday due to the cold.
Farther north on the East Coast, snowfall totals in Massachusetts are expected to be between two and four inches. Snowfall totals in Connecticut and Rhode Island could range from half an inch to three inches, according to the National Weather Service office in Boston.
Early next week, areas in the Northeast could also experience subzero wind chills, forecasters said.
Wind chills of -15 to -25 are expected in Chicago according to the National Weather Service, with subzero lows expected Sunday and Monday night. In addition to sub-zero temperatures, high single-digit temperatures are expected, which won’t give people any relief from the bitter cold.
Lake effect snow is also expected with a risk of snow showers across the region.
Although Florida won’t experience extremely cold temperatures or several inches of snow, the polar vortex will still bring below normal temperatures to the Sunshine State.
Cooler than normal temperatures could be seen in some areas of the state, according to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay.
Areas around Indianapolis are expected to receive some amount of snow, according to the National Weather Service office, with areas receiving less than an inch of snow.
But the region is expecting extremely cold temperatures, with temperatures in the single digits.
Southeastern areas will see some snowfall this weekend. Areas of northwest Georgia have about a 50 percent chance of seeing snow, according to the National Weather Service Office in Atlanta.
