Pakistan and India – nuclear weapons rivals sharing a border in a lightning point region – exchange artillery fire and threats of reprisals as tensions increase after an Indian attack.
India has said that it has launched missiles aimed at “terrorist infrastructure” in Pakistan and Kashmir administered by Pakistan, the divided Himalayan territory, of which India also controls a section. Pakistani officials said that none of the six targeted locations in Pakistan were militant camps, according to Reuters. The Pakistani army said it had killed five Indian planes during the attack – a complaint not confirmed by India.
India reproaches Pakistan for an attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, a picturesque Himalayan meadow, who killed 26 tourists, most of them. Pakistan says that evidence is manufactured and denies any involvement. According to Reuters, dozens of victims have already been reported and the two countries have promised additional military action. Pakistan has promised reprisals at the same time and in place of their choice, and India promises a compensation for any other response.
