When did the Oklahoma City Thunder last win the NBA championship? Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leads the team to the first ring since the name change

The Oklahoma City Thunder are one of the favorites to win the NBA championship this year.

Led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder finished with the best record in the Western Conference, ahead of the defending champions Denver Nuggets.

That meant they entered the playoffs for the first time since 2020 as the No. 1 seed and ended up sweeping the New Orleans Pelicans in the first round.

Mark Daigeneault’s team made history by becoming the youngest team to win a playoff series.

The Thunder have an incredibly exciting roster with five starters—Gilgeous Alexander, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, Josh Giddey, and Lu Dort—all thriving.

And with age on their side, this could just be the start of a few special years in Oklahoma.

However, it’s been a long wait for success for the Thunder, and talkSPORT.com took a look at the last time they won a ring…

The Oklahoma City Thunder’s last NBA championship

The Oklahoma City Thunder have never won the NBA championship.

However, before being renamed in 2008, they won a ring known as the Seattle Supersonics.

This happened in 1979 as they defeated the Washington Bullets (now called Washington Wizards) in five games in the NBA Finals.

The closest the franchise came to winning a championship was in 2012, when the Thunder reached their first-ever Finals.

A team featuring youngsters Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook took on an iconic Miami Heat team featuring NBA legends LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh.

Hilarious courtside footage of LeBron James shows the NBA legend calling himself the ‘GOAT’ after receiving trash talk.

KD and Westbrook were trying their best to win a ring, but they lost over five games and had to settle for second place that year.

Both of these players found success individually, but the Thunder never returned to the finals to try to win the world title.

But this could be the year they go far and potentially end their long wait for glory.
