WhatsApp beta adds voice message transcription on Android

The latest WhatsApp beta brings voice message transcription – a feature previously limited to Google Messages on Pixel phones – to all Android devices.

According to WABetaInfo, the latest WhatsApp beta for Android v2.24.15.5 adds voice message transcription to the popular cross-platform messaging service. This feature was previously spotted in development, but it seems that the feature is now ready to roll out in multiple languages.

Although we have updated to the latest beta version of WhatsApp, this option is not yet available on many of our test devices. This report indicates that when you update to this beta version, WhatsApp will display a pop-up to confirm that transcriptions are available for incoming voice messages.

You may see a pop-up when launching the app after the update. To work in WhatsApp, you must first download a language pack or voice message transcription. This feature only supports five languages at the moment: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Hindi. Once you do, the audio is analyzed before a transcription is produced. All transcriptions are generated on your phone, while voice messages are also encrypted to ensure privacy.

This is eerily similar to how some Google Pixel phones are able to get voicemail transcriptions when using SMS, MMS, or RCS messaging in Google Messages. In this case, the audio is quickly analyzed before a text dialog appears in the audio waveform. This allows you to still get the context of a message even if you’re not able to listen to it at the time.

As we mentioned before, even if you’ve updated to the latest WhatsApp beta, you may not have this option right away. It looks like this feature is currently rolling out to a small group of beta testers in some regions. Hopefully, we’ll see a wider rollout, as this is a great additional accessibility feature. It also means you won’t have to endure podcast-length voice notes in the future.

It’s great to see WhatsApp at least testing a feature like this, as many other cross-platform services don’t offer this feature, even with significant AI integration and improved features. Hopefully, it will be rolled out more widely soon.
