The coronavirus has evolved once again, in a familiar echo of years past. Unlike previous versions of the virus, this new variant does not cause widespread devastation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it is monitoring a variant called KP.2 and sees no evidence that it causes more severe illness than other strains. Laboratory tests have shown that KP.2 does not cause an increase in infections or transmission, the agency said.
