What you need to know about the president’s visit to the Emerald City

President Joe Biden is visiting the Emerald City Friday and Saturday as part of his re-election campaign.

Biden landed at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) aboard Air Force One just before 5 p.m. Friday and was greeted by several elected officials, including Governor Jay Inslee, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, King Down Constantine County Executive, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA). -07) and Rep. Suzan DelBene (WA-01).

The White House said Biden was scheduled to attend a campaign event in Seattle on Friday at 7 p.m.

The president’s visit to Seattle this weekend will also cause delays at SEA and road closures around the Puget Sound region.

With Biden in town, many security measures are being taken. An Alaska Airlines spokesperson said the safety protocol for the arrival of Air Force One called for air traffic at SEA to be stopped at least 30 minutes before the plane landed, and that all Airlines could experience potential delays during this time.

Airport officials said if everything goes as planned, the impact should be minimal for the time window, but they still recommend you check with your airline.

Roads will also be closed in Seattle during Biden’s visit. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) said it expected “significant travel delays and detours” around the Seattle area during Biden’s visit.

The U.S. Secret Service has the authority to intermittently close roads and highways during Biden’s visit for security reasons. SDOT said travelers can plan ahead by “anticipating delays and temporary road closures,” including the flow of buses and cars in downtown Seattle and the region that is affected.

SDOT said residents should consider options for getting around the city without driving, such as using public transportation or biking to avoid traffic delays.

The department also said engineers can adjust the timing of traffic signals based on planned closures and can also display messages on dynamic message boards if necessary.

King County Metro also posts service advisories online and sends transit alerts to riders. SDOT said residents can see if a bus route is affected by the closures on King County Metro’s service advisories page.

Biden is expected to leave Seattle on Saturday afternoon after a “campaign reception” in Medina, Washington. The White House said the campaign event is scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m. Biden is expected to leave SEA for Dover, Delaware, at 1:35 p.m.

When Biden last visited Seattle in April 2022 for Earth Day, he visited Green River College in Auburn.
