Tesla provided more details on its planned launch of Robotaxi June in Austin on Tuesday Winding call Q1.
A Tesla Robotaxi service occurs years after several missed deadlines and an increasingly competitive – but smaller – field.
General Motors’ cruise bowed out of the race earlier this year, but Alphabet Waymo has continuously accelerated its service and now provides 200,000 rides per week in limited parts of the San Francisco, Phoenix, Atlanta and Austin region, according to the company.
There is also the Amazon zoox, which manufactures its own specially designed Robotaxi and other companies focused on software that hopes to provide autonomous driving features to OEM vehicles.
But Elon Musk swears through the approach of the autonomy of the company.
During the call for earnings, he described Tesla’s autonomous driving capacities as a “generalized solution using artificial intelligence”.
The CEO has already praised this approach, which refers to Tesla’s dependence on cameras – as opposed to a expensive hardware battery made up of sensors and cameras – and an AI that will use the visual entrance to drive the vehicle. This could allow Tesla to scale autonomy faster and lower costs, because, in theory, any Tesla model could be deployed in the form of Robotaxi.
“I predict that there will be millions of teslas operating independently – completely autonomous – in the second half of next year,” said Musk during the call.
Here is what we now know about the Tesla Robotaxi service – and some persistent questions:
What will the planned deployment in Tesla Robotaxi look like in June?
Tesla took care to call the Robotaxi service, we will see in June a “pilot” deployment, which alludes to the limited scale of the initial launch.
Musk said during the call that the “first day” of the Robotaxi service will start with “perhaps 10 or 20 vehicles”. From there, Tesla “will quickly reduce,” he said.
“Once we have made it work in a few cities, we can essentially work in all the cities of this legal jurisdiction,” he said.
What Tesla cars will be used for the launch of Robotaxi?
The first set of Tesla Robotaxis should be the YS model via a software update, according to Musk.
“With the software update, she will become independent,” said Musk. “To be clear, the model that we are talking about being autonomous in Austin in June is the model that we are currently making. There is no change.”
It is not clear if the first batch of Robotaxie will be managed directly by Tesla or if it will be made up of private teslas through which the owners will oppose the service.
The CEO also said that cybercab is a separate product. In October 2024, Tesla unveiled a two -door robotaxi specially designed without steering wheel.
“We have a product called cybercab,” he said when calling on Tuesday. “And then if Tesla – which could be a (model) S, 3, X or Y which is autonomous – is a robotic taxi or a robotaxi. It’s very confusing.”
So when will we get cybercab?
Cybercab volume production is still scheduled for 2026, said Lars Moravy, vice-president of Tesla vehicle engineering during the call.
Moravy said the company is currently “validating the B sample” of the vehicle, which means that Tesla builds the prototype of the car but using materials that will be close to the final product.
“Big Builds” or the next stage in vehicle construction before volume production arrived at the end of the second quarter, said Moravy.
Tesla plans that it will be able to quickly pump cybercabs on a large scale using what the company calls its manufacturing method “not blocked”.
Traditional car manufacturers build cars on a mounting chain. Tesla bets on a new method where different parts of the car are assembled simultaneously and then combined later.
“We are still planned for production next year,” said Moravy.
How can we order a Tesla Robotaxi in June?
Tesla did not explain how the inhabitants of Austin will be able to order a Robotaxi when launching when calling results.
The company previously teased its mobile carpooling application last year, in which a user can “invoke” a car and adjust climate settings before arriving.
When will Tesla Robotaxis be available outside Austin?
Musk did not provide an exact calendar for Tesla’s expansion plans. But the CEO has given fairly ambitious figures.
In addition to predicting “millions” of Robotaxis on the road to the second half of next year, Musk said that he predicts that Tesla would take “90 percent” of the carpooling market.
Musk is so optimistic about these figures because, in theory, all Tesla on the road should be able to operate as a robotaxi via a software update.
This is different from a company like Waymo, which is not only based on sensors and cameras for its autonomous vehicle, but must also map a city before its robotaxis can be deployed to the public.
A Waymo spokesperson did not respond to a request for comments.
