The Israeli army recognized the faults in its first stories of the involvement of its troops in the murder last month of 15 people in the south of Gaza who, according to the United Nations, were all paramedical paramedics and rescuers.
Admission occurred on Saturday, the day after a video obtained by the New York Times seems to contradict a key element in the previous version of the army events. While the army said it had shot vehicles after “advancing with suspicion”, the video showed clearly marked ambulances and a fire truck.
The episode attracted an international examination and conviction. After the blatant inconsistencies in the Israeli account have been revealed, the army seemed to evolve more quickly than usual to solve the problem. Internal military surveys in questionable fatal episodes can flow for months or even years.
Here is what we know so far:
In his first statements after the discovery of the bodies, the army insisted that his troops had opened fire when a convoy approached them in the darkness “without headlights or emergency signals”.
But the video – discovered on the mobile phone of a paramedical paramedic that was found in a mass tomb – shows that the ambulances and fire trucks had light emergency lights while the Israeli forces unleash their dam.
The army now claims that the initial account of forces on the ground has “been wrong”.
