Although some areas won’t see much snowfall, if at all, a band of lake-effect snow is expected to develop beginning Sunday evening, possibly dumping several inches of snow in the far northeast of the ‘Illinois.
The dose of wintry weather could bring between 3 and 5 inches of snow to Lake County and create driving problems as the work week begins.
Here’s an overview of what to expect and when:
Sunday evening
While the night begins with clear weather, snowy conditions could begin around 10 p.m. and begin to impact travel.
“A winter storm will bring accumulating snow and slippery travel to areas near and south of U.S. Route 24 this evening and night,” the National Weather Service said on its website. “Additionally, slippery travel conditions will be possible in parts of metro Chicago this evening as lake-effect snow moves toward the coast.”
Monday morning
The bulk of the lake effect snow will occur between late Sunday and early Monday, according to the NWS. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slippery during this time, while the strip is expected to remain stationary.
Monday morning and evening travel will be affected, the NWS said.
Additionally, wind gusts of around 30 miles per hour could further reduce visibility and cause more problems on the road.
As a result, a winter weather advisory remains in effect for Lake County from midnight to 4 p.m. Monday.
Monday afternoon and evening
Once the afternoon arrives, the lake effect band is expected to pivot and move south through Cook County along the lake’s edge. The group will deliver snow to the southern suburbs and northwest Indiana by evening as it slowly moves in.
However, drivers should remain cautious as road conditions could deteriorate.
Further accumulations could arrive in the following hours, as the group could become stationary until midnight, according to the NWS.
Tuesday morning
Once midnight passes, the band should begin to dissipate, and it may continue to do so for several hours. All will probably be said and done around 4 a.m.
